How to Bold Text in WhatsApp (and Why It Sometimes Does Not Work)
Bold is the most useful formatting in WhatsApp. A single bold word pulls the eye to the thing that matters — a name, a time, a price, a deadline — without you writing in ALL CAPS. The good news: it takes exactly one character on each side. The slightly annoying news: people coming from other apps often type it the wrong way and wonder why it does not work.
Here is everything about bolding text in WhatsApp, including the mistakes that quietly break it.
How to make text bold in WhatsApp
Wrap the words you want bold in single asterisks:
*This is bold* → This is bold
That is the entire rule. Type an asterisk, your text, then another asterisk, with no spaces between the asterisk and the words. It works the same in one-to-one chats, groups, and Channels, on every platform — iPhone, Android, and WhatsApp Web.
On your phone
There is also a shortcut without typing symbols:
- Type your message.
- Double-tap or long-press a word to select it (drag the handles to extend the selection).
- On iPhone, tap the arrow / B_U option in the popup and choose Bold.
- On Android, tap the three-dot menu in the selection popup and choose Bold.
WhatsApp inserts the asterisks for you. We cover the platform differences in WhatsApp Formatting on iPhone vs Android vs Web.
Why bold sometimes does not work
If your text shows literal asterisks instead of turning bold, it is almost always one of these:
- You used two asterisks.
**bold**is Markdown bold, not WhatsApp bold. WhatsApp wants a single asterisk:*bold*. This is by far the most common mistake, especially when pasting from a document or an AI chatbot. - There is a space inside the asterisks.
* bold *will not format. The asterisk has to touch the text:*bold*. - A symbol is missing. If you have an opening
*but no closing one, nothing bolds. - You are inside a code block or backticks. Text wrapped in backticks is shown literally, so asterisks there stay visible on purpose.
- A very old WhatsApp version. Rare today, but ancient versions may not render formatting.
The double-asterisk problem (and pasted text)
If you copy text from Google Docs, Notion, or an AI assistant like ChatGPT, the "bold" usually arrives as **double asterisks** because those tools use Markdown. Pasted into WhatsApp, every bold phrase shows its asterisks.
You have two options:
- Manually remove one asterisk from each side.
- Paste the text into the MD2WA editor, which converts Markdown
**bold**into WhatsApp*bold*automatically, then copy the clean result.

When to use bold (and when not to)
Bold works because it is rare. A message where half the words are bold has no emphasis at all — everything shouts, so nothing stands out. Some guidelines:
- Bold one key detail per short message: the date, the amount, the action.
- For business messages, bold the headline or the call to action, not entire paragraphs. More on this in How to Format WhatsApp Business Messages That Get Read.
- Combine bold with italic for a title-like effect:
*_Weekly Update_*→ a bold-italic line. - Avoid bolding long runs of text; use a short bold lead-in instead.
Combining bold with other styles
Bold stacks with the other inline styles:
| You type | Result |
|---|---|
*bold* | bold |
*_bold italic_* | bold italic |
*~bold strikethrough~* |
Just keep the symbols balanced — every opening symbol needs a matching closing one.
Frequently asked questions
What is the WhatsApp bold shortcut on a computer? On WhatsApp Web and Desktop, select text and press Ctrl+B (Cmd+B on Mac). You can also just type the asterisks.
Why does my bold show two stars?
You typed **text**. Remove one star from each side to get *text*.
Can I bold part of a word? It is unreliable. WhatsApp formatting works best around whole words with clear boundaries.
Does bold work in a wa.me pre-filled message? Support varies by device, so do not rely on it. See WhatsApp Click-to-Chat Links (wa.me).
Bold is one character on each side — *like this*. Remember that it is a single asterisk, keep the symbols snug against the words, and for anything pasted from another app, let MD2WA fix the asterisks for you.
